Our Process

How Block Walls Works

01

Site Visit & Estimate

We visit your property, discuss the wall's purpose (privacy, boundary, retaining), take measurements, assess soil and grade conditions, and provide a detailed written estimate.

02

Footing & Foundation

A reinforced concrete footing is poured to the correct width and depth for the wall height and soil conditions. Rebar dowels are set vertically to tie the wall to the footing.

03

Block Laying & Reinforcement

CMU blocks are laid course by course with mortar joints. Vertical rebar cells are filled with grout. Horizontal bond beams are placed at required intervals for structural integrity.

04

Cap, Finish & Cleanup

Wall caps are set (flat, rounded, or decorative). Joints are tooled for a clean finish. The site is cleaned up and we walk through the completed wall with you.

Why Choose Us

Why Our Block Walls Stands Out

Block walls are everywhere in the Rio Rancho and Albuquerque metro area — they define property lines, provide privacy, retain slopes, and add structure to outdoor spaces. Sombrero Construction has been building and repairing block walls across the metro since 2003. We install new CMU (concrete masonry unit) block walls for privacy, property boundaries, wind screens, and retaining applications. We repair cracked, leaning, or damaged walls. And we replace walls that have deteriorated beyond repair — including full tear-out and rebuild. Every block wall we build starts with a proper concrete footing, uses reinforced construction with rebar and grout-filled cores, and is finished with your choice of cap — flat, rounded, or decorative. We know the local building codes, soil conditions, and wind loads that affect wall design in this area. Whether you're building a new driveway in Rio Rancho, adding a patio in Corrales, pouring a slab in Albuquerque's North Valley, or installing a block wall in Bernalillo — our crew knows the local soil, climate, and building requirements and delivers quality results on every project.

Block Walls

Structurally Sound

Every wall we build has a reinforced concrete footing, grouted rebar cores, and bond beams. No shortcuts — your wall is built to handle New Mexico's wind, soil movement, and temperature changes.

Built to Code

We know the local height limits, setback requirements, and structural codes for block walls in Rio Rancho and Albuquerque. Your wall will be built to meet or exceed code requirements.

Fair, Clear Pricing

Block wall pricing is based on linear footage, height, and site conditions. You get a detailed written estimate with no hidden fees.

Efficient Scheduling

Most residential block walls are completed in 3–7 days depending on length and height. We schedule efficiently and keep your project moving.

FAQ

Common Questions About Block Walls

Block wall cost depends on length, height, footing requirements, and finish. Standard 6-foot privacy walls typically range from $30–$55+ per linear foot depending on site conditions. Contact us for a free estimate specific to your project.

In most Rio Rancho and Albuquerque jurisdictions, walls over 6 feet require a building permit. Walls in setback areas may have additional height restrictions. We're familiar with local codes and can advise you on permit requirements during the estimate.

Yes. We repair cracked mortar joints, replace damaged blocks, stabilize leaning walls, and rebuild failed sections. If a wall is too far gone for repair, we'll recommend replacement and provide pricing for both options.

Yes. We build CMU retaining walls for sloped lots and grade changes. Retaining walls require specific engineering for the soil load they're holding back, including proper drainage behind the wall, weep holes, and reinforcement. We design each retaining wall for the specific conditions on your property.

We use standard CMU (gray or tan), split-face block for a textured look, and slump block for a Southwestern style. Cap options include flat caps, bullnose (rounded) caps, and decorative precast caps. Walls can also be stuccoed and painted to match your home.

Timeline depends on wall length and height. A typical 50–100 linear foot residential wall is completed in 3–7 days, including footing, block work, and cap installation. We'll give you a specific timeline during the estimate.

We strongly recommend having your property surveyed before building a boundary wall. Building on your neighbor's property — even by a few inches — can create costly legal disputes. If you don't have a recent survey, we can recommend a local surveyor.
